Trust God to the details

The book of Esther is usually thought of as a book about a woman whose events are happening so that she can be instrumental in the saving of her people.

But woven in between is the story of Mordecai, where a bunch of unconnected events show to me that God can be trusted to the details. It’s almost like the perfect subplot in a well written movie.

  1. Mordecai uncovers a plot against the King and alerts the palace so they can stop the plans.
  2. Mordecai refuses to give honour to Haman, which annoys Haman intensely.
  3. Haman decides to kill Mordecai.
  4. The King re-reads about Mordecai’s good deed and wants to honour him.
  5. Haman comes to the King and the King tells Haman to honour Mordecai, which further humiliates Haman.
  6. Haman is exposed as the instigator of killing the Jews and the King has him killed.

Mordecai didn’t really do anything special to ‘protect’ himself – but God was at work before threat, and with various characters, so that no harm came to Mordecai. Put your hope in God!
