Eat what you have

We bought a food share this summer. It’s a half share of vegetables from a local organic farm. (Read more about Community Supported Agriculture)

Each week we get a box of veggies that were ready this week. And so we have to eat them. Even if we don’t like them or even know what they are.

Part of eating all we get is that I don’t want to waste the food I’ve bought and paid for. Part of it is the fun and the adventure! This is what is in season and locally grown. It’s nutritious and good for me, so I better eat it!

My husband doesn’t like snap peas. I’m not crazy about them. But they came this week. So we ate them. (Not lots; we’ll try to get through them all before they go bad.)

I made ’spinach’ dip (the stuff that goes with bread) but from swiss chard, because that’s what I have right now. You can’t tell the difference, that’s for sure! So many of our items can easily be swapped for others – recipes are very flexible.

Choice is good. But in North America we must have choice, we demand it, and now we have no idea what is grown around where we live and when, nor the amount of energy it takes to get watermelon to Ontario in February.

This disconnect is lessening for me as I am more connected to a farm that grows the food I eat. And I’m glad.

I’m so glad that you’re having a good experience with the CSA!!! Brad and I didn’t look into it soon enough to get on board this year, but we’d like to do it next year – of course, hopefully we’ll all be sharing then anyways!! LOL *AND* you’ll be able to tell us what to make with it all!!

Your CSA sounds like a pleasant experience. I’m researching wasted food and I’m curious about whether that’s hard to avoid with a CSA. It seems like a bit of a challenge to eat everything, given the rate the produce arrives and how little you like some things. What happens if you go on vacation? Is that money lost or does your CSA allow a few exceptions?
I’ll look forward to any updates on the topic. Thanks for sharing.

When we’re on vacation, we’ll be giving our food share to friends for them to eat. I haven’t inquired about anything the CSA would do for vacations. If we have too much food, we’d give it to friends or neighbours, so hopefully not much will go bad.

So far, only a few things have gone bad on us, but not more than normal for the veggies in my fridge. I forget about things sometimes and then the next time I look, they are all slimy. Good thing we have compost!
